NMR Information:

The site of the First World War Royal Flying Corps airfield at Knavesmire, York. The airfield was established on the race course and was used by No.33 Squadron for home defence duties to protect York. The landing ground was used by a detachment of BE2cs for a short time in 1916, however no other details of its usage are known. The airfield may have continued in the early 1920s as a civil airfield. Knavesmire airfield was open from 6 April 1916 to the 1920s. (2)
