Monument record MYO4175 - Ditch and pit

Summary

Probable Roman ditch and pit located during a WB in 2008. Ditch was orientated east to west and measured 16.5m in length and 3m in width. The fill appeared to represent the silting up of the open ditch. The ditch probably represents either a boundary ditch or a large drainage ditch. Two pottery sherds from locally produced vessels were recovered from the surface deposit of the ditch dated to the Roman late 1st to the early 3rd centuries. The pit was located on the southern side of the ditch and measured 1m in diameter with a U-shaped profile 0.25m in depth. The pit contained a single fill from which a fragment of animal bone was recovered. The pit fill appears to represent silting up of the feature and was similar in character to that of the ditch. The function of the pit is undetermined.
