Full Description
House. 1865. Brick with stone and painted stone dressings. Slate roof. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys above a basement. 3 bays. On the ground floor there is a moulded timber canted bay window which is sashed and has a modillion cornice and a lead-covered roof. Its brick base contains basement windows which are sashed with glazing bars and have stone surrounds. The 2 left-hand windows to both the 1st and 2nd floors are closely-spaced. The 1st floor windows have margin panes and have opening casements 2 panes high below fixed lights one pane high. The moulded sills are continued as plain sill bands, and above each sill there is a horizontal cast-iron bar. Above the windows there are lead-covered canopies carried on painted corbels, with cusped timber valances. The 2 left-hand windows share one canopy and the right-hand window has a separate canopy. The 2nd floor windows are glazing bar sashes (6 over 6) with a sill band and brick flat arches. The doorway, in the right-hand bay reached by external stone steps, has a stone surround which has pilasters with some carved decoration on their caps, and a moulded shallow segmental arch with keystone. The cornice hood is carried on brackets and has a lead pitched roof. The recessed door has 4 raised and fielded panels, and the overlight has a segmental top. The timber gutter cornice extends between gable kneeler brackets and is supported on paired brackets rising from an elaborate fascia. Gable chimneys. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: the attached railings have spear head finials and are set on low brick walls with stone copings. The gate is also of iron, with iron gateposts which have ball finials. Nos 1-22 Bootham Terrace form an unusually complete row of speculatively built terraced houses, constructed between 1860 and 1870 to an interesting variety of different designs.
