Full Description

Shop. 1842, with late C19 shopfront; later alteration. By JB and W Atkinson for Mark Rooke. Red brick in Flemish bond, with moulded and bracketed timber eaves cornice; brick stack to slate roof. EXTERIOR: 4-storey 1-window front. Shopfront of partly grooved pilasters with banded inserts of carved rosettes, and scalloped capitals; frieze between grooved brackets beneath brattished modillion cornice. C20 shop window and door. On first floor, inserted canted bay window with 1-pane sashes beneath transom lights of coloured glass. On second floor, 12-pane margin-glazed sash window with slender glazing bars; on third floor unequal 9-pane sash; both have painted stone sills and cambered brick arches. INTERIOR: winder staircase with stick balusters, shaped handrail and turned newel. (City of York: RCHME: South-west of the Ouse: HMSO: 1972-: 124).
