House, part now office: wall, railings and gates attached at front. Early C18 with late C18 and early C19 alterations and additions; wall, railings and gates probably early C19. House of brick with painted stone or stucco dressings; slate roof. Front wall is red brick with cambered stone coping, railings and gates of cast-iron. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys. 2 bays each side of 3-storey one-bay porch. The facade has a storey band, which is continued as a cornice around the porch. Above the 1st floor windows there is a heavy cornice, and a low attic storey (probably a late C18 addition) with a parapet coping above. The ground and first floor windows are glazing bar sashes. Except for the porch window they have rubbed brick flat arches and triple keyblocks. The 1st floor window of the porch has an architrave, and the narrow side windows are fixed with glazing bars. The windows of the attic storey are low 2-light casements with leaded glazing and rubbed brick flat arches. The front and side windows of the porch are similar. The porch is probably late C18 and has chamfered outer angles. The stuccoed ground floor is an early C19 alteration and has paired pilasters supporting the entablature. 3 recessed steps lead to the divided 6-panel doors with a 4-pane overlight. Gable chimneys. INTERIOR: not inspected. RCHM records entrance hall moulded cornice, dado rail and fine doorcases, plus round archway with fluted pilasters to stairhall. Staircase has 2 balusters, one turned and one twisted, per head, and moulded handrail. Round archway with fluted pilasters on half landing. Ground floor room to west has fine original panelling and bolection mould fireplace with pedimented overmantel. First floor has saloon with plaster panelling, cornice, fine doorcases, elaborately carved fireplace with overmantel, and Adam style ceiling. Many other fireplaces and door surrounds in other rooms. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: dwarf wall and railings extend full width of front and return at each side of porch. Railings are square
in section with spike finials; standards are turned with vase-like finials. Gates flanking porch are of the same railings. Forecourt wall, gates and railings listed on 24.06.83. (RCHME: City of York: South-west of the Ouse: HMSO: 1972-: 113).
