House, now two shops. Probably C15, extended in late C17; No.40 refronted in late C18; No.38 raised in early C19; C20 shopfronts and alterations.

MATERIALS: timber-framed, with painted brick front; rear of orange-brown brick in random bond and orange brick in stretcher bond; No.38 raised in pink-grey mottled brick in English garden-wall bond; pantile roofs with brick stacks.

EXTERIOR: 3-storey 2-window front to No.38; 2-storey 1-window front to No.40. Both parts have plain shopfronts with plate glass windows, glazed and panelled doors and integral sunblinds: No.38 incorporates 4-panel passage door with overlight at right end. On first floor, No.38 has one 20-pane sash with cambered arch of brick headers to right, and one 12-pane sash to left; on second floor, two 16-pane sashes. No.40 has one 16-pane sash on first floor.

No.38 has timber guttering, No.40 boxed eaves with inverted bell rainwater head, dated 1782, at right end. No.38 has Sun Insurance firemark between first floor windows. Rear: twin gabled; 3 storeys to No.38, 2 storeys and attic to No.40. No.38 has 2-storey canted bay window with moulded cornice: window on ground floor altered to doorway; 2x12-pane Yorkshire sash on first floor; outer lights on both floors bricked up, and window surrounds hollow chamfered. Dentilled cornice over ground floor opening returns to left of bay, above disused passage door. On first floor to left of bay, inserted C20 window beneath residual cogged brick second floor string. Above bay on second floor, 4-pane sash and to left small fixed light. No.40 has 12-pane sash window on first floor and shuttered opening in attic. Brick dentil coping to gable.

Houses and Shops, Nos. 38, 40, incorporate parts of a mediaeval timber-framed structure, probably of the 15th century, which may have comprised two two-storeyed parallel ranges, gabled to the street and two rooms deep. The building was largely reconstructed in brick in the 17th century and the back wall, with a two-storey bay window, is of this period. No. 40 was refronted probably in 1782 but retains the 17th-century rear gable; the back of No. 38 was heightened in the 19th century.
