York Historic Environment Record

Work in Museum Gardens has been undertaken as part of a collaboration between the Dept of Archaeology, University of York and the Yorkshire Museum, and forms part of the training for a small group of second year undergraduates. The aim of the survey is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the sub-surface remains within the garden to aid in historical interpretation and practical management of the site. The nature of the site throws up various logistical challenges for survey, given the number of obstacles from above ground buildings, planting, footpaths, etc. However, the survey thus far has identified some anomalies that are not readily attributable to known historical remains, and would benefit from further investigation.
