Description

Excavation of a total of seven evaluation trenches. Within the majority of the trenches the only features recorded were medieval to post-medieval plough furrows, aligned approximately north-south. Within the most northwestern trench (Trench 1) a broad, shallow, east-west aligned ditch was encountered, which clearly pre-dated the ridge and furrow field system. Occasional fragments of pottery dated to the Romano-British period were recovered from this ditch. Although the site also has the potential to contain archaeological remains dating to the English Civil War no features of this date were identified within the trenches. Two complete clay pipe bowls, of mid 17th century types were recovered from the topsoil in Trench 1 and hint at activity of this date in the vicinity. The results of this evaluation suggest that whilst archaeological deposits are present on the site these would not be of such significance to prevent the development from being granted planning permission. However, it is anticipated that any such grant of permission would include conditions to ensure that the archaeology could either be preserved in-situ, or by record.
