Description
Initially twenty two machine trenches, each measuring 50m x 2m, were excavated across the site (Trenches A to V). Prior to backfilling a further four trenches were excavated to establish the extent and alignment of a feature recorded in Trench T (Trenches T1 to T4).
Furrows were recorded in most of the trenches. In some instances these had been cut by later drains. The
alignment of the land drains indicated that the majority had been inserted when the furrows could still be seen as earthworks.
The only other archaeological features comprised a north south aligned ditch and a post hole. The ditch was initially identified under a furrow in Trench T and was followed in additional trenches to the north and northeast. A single sherd of 15th century pottery was recovered from its upper fill. Biological assessment indicated that its primary fill had poor environmental potential and did not contain suitable material for radio carbon dating.
The post hole was recorded in Trench T4. It contained a flat cobble in its base which had been used to support a post.
The evaluation has confirmed that the site has a low archaeological potential. It is characterised by the remains of late medieval cultivation which now only survives as sub‐surface features. Evidence for earlier deposits are limited to a single ditch and posthole located in the southern part of the site.
