Description

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by On-Site Archaeology Ltd at the site of the former Fordlands House, 1 Fordlands Road, Fulford, York during groundwork associated with the erection of a care home. Planning permission for the development includes a condition requiring an archaeological watching brief. The site lies in an area with the potential to contain archaeological remains of prehistoric, Romano-British and early medieval date, although a programme of evaluation trenching on the site had indicated that a significant degree of truncation had taken place in association with previous, 20th century development of the site. The new building is to be constructed using piled foundations. The watching brief was therefore carried out, following demolition, during groundworks required for the installation of a pile mat and for the redirection of a main sewer. The watching brief confirmed that the degree of truncation indicated in the evaluation was severe and no pre-20th century deposits had survived.
