Description

An Archaeological Evaluation by Trial Trenching was carried out by MAP Archaeological Practice Ltd. in the back garden of the Jorvik Hotel, 50-52 Margate, between the 31st July and 4th August 2017. Three Trial Trenches, two measuring 1m by 1m and one measuring 2m by 4m were excavated to establish the nature, location, extent and state of preservation of any archaeological deposits on the site. Evaluation Trench 1 contained a single Roman feature dated around AD 160-200. The pottery associated with the feature is consistent with an urban/military character that would be expected of an assemblage from York. No archaeological features were revealed within Trenches 2 or 3.
