Description

A thick (at least 8m) deposit of dense sand, with a surface at about 3m Below OD, could represent a variation in the (normally compact clay) glacial till. However, other evidence (see for example EYO5793) hows sandstone bedrock at a higher level than this, so it is probably the top of the bedrock. Above this were silts with a surface about 0.5m AOD, overlain by thinner deposits of sand and gravel. The top of this deposit was around 0.6 to 1.8m AOD, suggestive of irregular gravelly spreads in a braided river channel. Above the sand and gravel were sandy silts mixed with layers of peat, which is interpreted as Roman and later activity in the margins of the river. Made ground above that suggest medieval reclamations into the river.
