Building recording. Clementhorpe Maltings is a Grade II Listed Building located south of York city centre on the west bank of the River Ouse. It was constructed in the late 19th century and is a good example of a small, urban maltings. A great deal of the malting equipment and machinery, such as the cistern steep, kiln furnace, double-bucket elevator and dressing machine, is still in situ. The building and its equipment has undergone a number of changes over time, and the H.J.H. King patent kiln furnace dates to the early 20th century. Throughout the 19th century, the west bank of the River Ouse was an industrialised area with a brewery, boat building yard and bone mill operating in the area together with Clementhorpe Dye Works and St Clement's Glass Works. Clementhorpe Maltings is an important survivor of the industrial landscape of modern York and its history and development would make an excellent case study as part of a wider investigation of the malting and brewing industry in York and the surrounding area.
