Description

Dark greenish grey/black loose fine silty sticky sand, 4m thick. Probably a mostly alluvial sequence in a low-lying area. This deposit occurred only in the east corner of the site (see also Pile 44), overlying natural but apparently below Anglo-Scandinavian occupation activity. Some of this may have been deposited during the Prehistoric and Roman periods, but it is suggested that most accumulated in the post-Roman period, as the relative rise in sea level probably had its biggest impact on the site then.
