Description

EXCAVATION Rescue excavation. Structures and features of Anglo-Scandinavian, medieval and post-medieval date were encountered. Interpretation of Anglo-Scandinavian levels was complicated by later stone robbing and extensive intrusion of medieval pits and buildings. Roman levels were reached only in a deep trench in the south corner of the site and in a trial trench in the west corner. These features comprised a road, well and associated structures. This site provided limited evidence for the development of the waterfront in the post-Roman period. Two Anglian or Anglo-Scandinavian structures were located here. One featured rubble packed foundation trenches which also contained upright timbers the other contained a clay floor surface. Both of these structures have not been seen elsewhere in York or have not been dated conclusively. The excavation revealed that this area contained a high density of structures in the Anglo-Scandinavian period. It has provided a sizeable body of evidence for A/S occupation within the former Roman Colonia south of the Ouse. Open area excavation, 33x23m Medieval: Roman: a sequence of seven superimposed road surfaces, probably a riverside road. Also a timber-lined well, abandoned in the 4th century. Two NMR entries for excavations on Skeldergate 1975. No. 658817 is for 1973-5.14. 635697 is for an excavtion on Skelderate 1975 no further information. A further NMR entry ( 658823 ) WB for 1973.32 'Skeldergate' - no other information.
