Description

Evaluation An archaeological evaluation was undertaken within the premises of 16 Toft Green, York from 19 November 2000 to 5 December 2000, in response to the proposed development of the building. The aim of this work was to establish the nature and extent of surviving archaeological remains and the impact the proposed works may have on these. To this end, two 3 metre square trenches were excavated within the building to a depth of approximately 1.50 metres. Archaeological investigation revealed that the upper 0.80 metres of material was comprised of modern floor surfaces and post-medieval dumping, overlying a series of features comprising primarily of levelling deposits, postholes, pits and floor surfaces. Structural features, including a wall and a well were uncovered and the latter was left in situ. Having excavated all archaeological deposits to the required depth, those features left in situ were recorded drawn and photographed, and where possible, chronological relationships were established. NMR Description Evaluation in advance of proposed development recorded post-medieval activity only.
