Description

Four trenches were excavated by YAT between 4th June and 27th July 2007.The remains in trenches 1,2 and 3 were mostly related to brick buildings and surfaces associated with the 18th-19th century tenements that are known to have occupied the area. In trench 4 a complex sequence of deposits was observed. The earliest deposits were a series of 12th century pits which were levelled before a post-built structure was erected in the later 12th century. This was in use until the 13th/14th century when it was replaced by a substantial limestone building. This was demolished in the early 16th century to clear the area for construction of a building accompanied by a drainage ditch. CBM recoverd from the structure suggests that a kiln may have been in operation nearby.
