Description
The earliest deposits encountered were burnt layers which had probably derived from domestic hearth rakings. The second phase of activity related to the medieval cemetery of All Saints which was in use from at least the early 12th century until the mid 16th century. The majority of the north-western part of the excavation area was dominated by graveyard deposits. The excavation uncovered evidence for several phases of buildings that developed around the former All Saints churchyard from the 17th century. The earliest buildings were probably timber-framed and dated to the 17th and early 18th centuries. The buildings were situated beneath the property later known as 18 Hay Market. By the 18th century the whole area surrounded by a former cemetery was built up and evidence was found for new brick built buildings, and numerous additions and rebuilds which occurred during the 18th and 19th centuries. A series of brick-built cess-pits and later coal drops were also found. The 19th and 20thcentury buildings surrounding the Hay Market were demolished during the late 1930s and the final chapter of the sites use in latter half of the 20th century was as an ambulance station.
