Description

A deposit model has been constructed for fields 13, 16 and 17, within the wider Heslington East development area. Primary data for the construction of an archaeological deposit model was obtained through both an electrical resistivity survey and also purposive borehole drilling. The application of a combined electrical resistivity and borehole deposit model offers significant advantages for the investigation of this area of the Heslington East site. The deposit sequence at B6, an area of similar lower topography within the wider development area, has demonstrated a Holocene sediment stack of c. 3m above the Pleistocene topography. This Holocene sequence has a generic upper sand sediment unit, which covers minerogenic organic rich clay deposits of early Holocene date, indicating a wetland zone. Preliminary synthesis of the original evaluation reports from Area B6 (YAT 2010), has suggested the potential for an area of raised topography within this wetland zone, however, the definition of this feature was vague.
