Description
The evaluation was carried out in the car park to the rear of 28-48 Blossom Street in advance of a proposed development. Three trenches were excavated - two were re-excavations and extensions of L.P.Wenham’s 1953 trenches. Roman deposits were encountered at 1.2 and 1.3m below ground surface in Trenches 1 and 2 . ARoman road, possible plough soil deposits, a linear cut, and a cobble surface were discovered in Trench 2, and Trench 1 proved to contain walls and a posthole, a large pit and possible ploughsoil deposits. Trench 3 contained medieval plough/garden soil, remains of the construction of the English Martyr’s School, and modern demolition debris.
