Description

Geotechnical, trench An archaeological evaluation was carried out on this site which consisted of a watching brief and a number of small excavations. This was conducted on the site of a proposed devlopment and initiated because of the previous reports of a Roman cemetary found on this site during the construction of the railway in the 19th century. This added to the recent excavation of burials in the Railway Hotels grounds indicated that this was an archaeologically sensitive area. However what these excavations revealed was that although there was archaeological deposits on this site what was recovered showed that they were all disturbed and redeposisted over the area of the site which was thought to be due to the original construstion of the railway. It was concluded though that the depth of the trenches dug meant that any surviving intact deposits cannot be ruled out as the contractor felt that the disturbance encountered could be localised and non uniform to the site as a whole.
