Description
A geophysical survey and two trenches formed an evaluation in advance of a planning application for a new development at Mill Mount. The object of the evaluation was to test for the presence of human burials relating to the extensive Roman cemetery on the Mount. Trench 1 revealed pits, post-holes and a drain trench of post-medieval and modern date. Trench 2 revealed four phases of archaeological activity. Phase 1 consisted of a curvilinear gully and possible pit. Phase 2 was represented by four inhumations. Three of these were aligned north-west to south-east, while the third was aligned south-west to north-east. Three of the inhumations were adult, one was that of a juvenile. Two of the graves produced evidence for wooden coffins. All the burials were Roman and later than 250AD. Phase 3 represented medieval cultivation of the area, and Phase 4 all modern activity. All the burials were cleaned, recorded, and then left in-situ.
NMR data - two entries for evaluation/exc in 1991 both associated with this record. RCHME microfilm PRN 2912.
