In January 1998 York Archaeological Trust carried out an archaeological evaluation of the former Foxton's Garage site, Leeman Road, York on beha4(ofprospective developers of the site. The evaluation consisted of a series of four boreholes sunk to a depth of 6m under archaeological supervision and the excavation offour archaeological trenches, three to a depth of 1. 50m and one to a depth of 3. 00m. Natural glacial drift was encountered at a depth of 5.25m Below Ground Level (BGL) (5.73m Above Ordnance Datum (AOD)), in one of the boreholes. This, together with other topographic evidence, suggests that the natural strata dip northwards, towards the river Ouse, at this site. No in-situ ancient archaeological deposits were encountered on the site although a considerable depth of re-deposited material, thought to have originated in the adjacent Roman cemetery and to have been dumped in the mid to late 19th century, was encountered. This material was seen to be in excess of 2. 00m deep (basal limits not reached) and was itself sealed by approximately 1. 00m of modern dump deposits laidfor the construction of the present garage. It is possible that parts of the Roman cemetery may have extended as far as the proposed development site and still lie preserved under this 19th century overburden NMR: YORYM: 1998.1.
