An archaeological evaluation was carried out to examine, and if possible find dating evidence associated with, a wall running between Black Horse Passage and the rear of 13-14 Fossgate. Two trenches were excavated .Trench 1 was located against the wall and was excavated to a depth of 1.0m. A keyhole trench within it was excavated to a depth of 2.0m. All of the deposits uncovered were post medieval, or possibly late medieval, in date. The footings of the wall were not revealed, but the evidence from the side of wall exposed in the trench indicates it to be of medieval date. Trench 2 was excavated to a depth of 1.0m. This trench revealed modern dump layers, modern wall footings and a Victorian drain. No deposits or features of any archaeological significance were uncovered.The deep accumulation of post medieval deposits suggests that undisturbed and potentially waterlogged deposits from earlier periods are likely to be present on the site.
