House. Early C18, front rebuilt 1810-20; early C20 shopfront           and alterations. Painted brick in Flemish bond with timber           shopfront and mutule eaves cornice, returned at left end;           slate roof, hipped at front, with tiled coping.           EXTERIOR: 4-storey, 2-window front. Shopfront framed in           sunk-panel pilasters with wheatear drops, and entablature with           pulvinated frieze and moulded dentil cornice: glazed and           panelled shop door between curved plate glass windows over           raised panel risers, with elliptical-arched 'Gothick'-glazed           fanlight above. Upper floor windows are 12-pane sashes on           first and second floors, and unequal 9-pane sashes on third           floor, all with painted sills and flat arches of gauged brick.           Fluted bowl rainwater head on left return.           INTERIOR: reset open string staircase with two turned           balusters to a tread, and moulded serpentine handrail, ramped           up to heavy column newel at stairhead; raised and fielded dado           panelling to stairwall. On first floor, room at stairhead has           re-used C17 panelling beneath fretwork frieze on one wall;           panelled chimneypiece wall has stone bolection moulded           fireplace surround, with cornice shelf of moulded timber and           eared overmantel panel. Moulded ceiling cornice and two early           C18 doors of 3 raised panels survive.           (City of York: RCHME: The Central Area: HMSO: 1981-: 157).
