Description

YORK SE6052SE MONKGATE 1112-1/14/740 (North West side) 24/06/83 Nos.45-51 (Odd) and attached walls and railings GV II Row of 4 houses, now houses and guesthouses. 1830-40. Brick in Flemish bond with painted stone dressings and slate roofs. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys plus attic and basement. Each house 2 bays. The facade of No.45 projects slightly, and Nos 47-51 have a continuous first floor sill band. The windows are glazing bar sashes with rusticated lintels with false keystones. The lintels to No.45 are of unpainted stone. No.51 has a wide canted bay window at ground floor and cellar level which has sashes without glazing bars and a cornice. Each house has an attic dormer. The doorways are in the right-hand bays, except for No.45, which has a doorway in the left-hand bay. The doorcases have engaged fluted Doric columns and panelled reveals. The doors have 6 panels and have overlights. The overlights to Nos 45 and 47 are glazed with margin panes. Ridge chimneys between houses. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: the garden front walls are of brick with stone and concrete copings. Nos 45 and 51 have cast-iron gates with turned gateposts which have ball finials. No.47 has similar gate piers but no gate. To the left of the gate to No.45 the wall is curved and carries railings. The front and left-hand side walls to No.51 also carry railings, with cast-iron spear finials.
