Description

YORK SE6051NW SHAMBLES 1112-1/28/1104 (North East side) 14/06/54 No.6 GV II House. Late C18; C20 renovation and shopfront. Grey-brown mottled brick in Flemish bond with timber cornice and shopfront; brick stack to hipped pantile roof. EXTERIOR: 3-storey 1-window front. Shopfront framed in pilasters and plain frieze and cornice on bulbous brackets: glazed and panelled door with divided overlight to right of small-pane shop window over brick riser. First floor window is 16-pane sash, on second floor squat 8-pane sash, both with painted sills and flat arches of orange gauged brick. Moulded modillion eaves cornice with fluted bowl rainwater head at right end. 2-course raised brick band to second floor. INTERIOR: close string staircase with 'Chinese fret' balustrade and ramped-up handrail rises from ground to second floor. On first floor, blocked fireplace with moulded frieze and cornice shelf survives. On second floor, cast-iron Art Nouveau fireplace. (City of York: RCHME: The Central Area: HMSO: 1981-: 213).
