Description

YORK SE6052SW STONEGATE 1112-1/27/1034 (North West side) 01/07/68 No.38 GV II House, now shop. Early C18 incorporating earlier structures; altered and extended in early and mid C19, and later. Front block of incised render at front, red brick in stretcher bond at rear; timber-framed wings encased in brick at rear: roofs of plain tile, pantile and slate with brick stack. EXTERIOR: 3-storey 2-window front. Shopfront framed in sunk-panelled pilasters with foliate scrolled brackets at the head: 4-light plate glass window with glazed shop door to left. To right are paired entrances to subdivided passage, one closed by iron grille, the other with C20 door beneath decorated overlight. First floor windows are shallow canted bays with plate glass lights framed in sunk-panelled pilasters with moulded capitals and moulded cornices: on second floor, 12-pane sash windows in shallow architraves with bracketed sills. Plain parapet masks roof. Broad raised band to second floor, broken by first floor bay windows. Right return: beyond passageway is pilaster doorcase with pediment on grooved brackets and recessed door of 6 sunk panels beneath divided overlight. INTERIOR: winder staircase rises to first floor, with symmetrically turned balusters and serpentine handrail wreathed at foot on turned newel and shaped curtain step.
