SE 6155 NW NEW EARSWICK SYCAMORE AVENUE (north side) 10/55 No 1-7 (odd) GV II Terrace of 4 houses. 1914. By Parker and Unwin, for Joseph Rowntree Village Trust. Brick with French tile roof. Lobby-entry plan. Living room and scullery to rear. 2 storeys, 8 bays with central 2 bays breaking forward slightly. Standard "New Earswick" window panes throughout. Central half-glazed doors recessed in round arched porches, flanked by pairs of 3- light windows with 2-light windows to outer bays. Tile band above. First floor: central pair of 2-light windows flanked by pairs of 3-light and 2- light windows. Hipped roof with sprocketed eaves. Stacks removed. Entrances to Nos 1 and 7 to side. The particular significance of New Earswick lies in its contribution to the development of low cost housing in Britain. Experience gained and practices introduced here were incorporated extensively into the Tudor Walters Report of 1918 which was instrumental in the passing of the Addison Act of 1919. Plans from New Earswick influenced the Government Manual on low cost housing which followed the Act.
