SE5951SW DALTON TERRACE 1112-1/19/284 (South side (off)) 24/06/83 Summerhouse approximately 75 metres south-west of The Mount School (Formerly Listed as: DALTON TERRACE Garden house in grounds of The Mount School)

Summerhouse. c1774; removed from the garden of Holgate House, No.163 Holgate Road (qv) and resited in the garden of The Mount School (qv) probably in early C20. Stone steps, timber structure, lead ogee roof. Octagonal on plan, raised on stepped circular base. EXTERIOR: attached Doric columns support entablature with fluted frieze and dentilled cornice which breaks forward over each column. One bay is open to provide access. The others are closed by 12-pane sash windows over blind balustrades of sturdy turned balusters the rail of which forms the plain window sill. Roof finial terminates as dragon weathervane. INTERIOR: fitted with attached bench behind which is a single fielded panel beneath each window. Boarded ceiling. The summerhouse was used by the American Quaker grammarian Lindley Murray during his residence at Holgate House.
