Description

YORK SE6051NW COPPERGATE 1112-1/28/275 (South East side) 14/06/54 No.26 (Formerly Listed as: COPPERGATE No.26 The Market Tavern Public House) GV II* House, now restaurant. Late C15; C17 rear wing, extended in C19; C18 and C19 alterations; renovated in late C20. MATERIALS: front range timber-framed, now with brick infilling, plastered and white-washed; timber eaves band, pierced by quatrefoils, and bracketed cornice to steeply-pitched tiled roof. Rear wing of brick, rendered and white-washed, with roofs of slate and pantile. Brick stacks are rebuilt. EXTERIOR: 3-storey 2-bay front range, first and second floors jettied; 2-storey wing with cellar to rear. Renewed glazed door and windows in shopfront of plain pilasters and moulded cornice on carved brackets. First floor windows are 4-pane sashes, on second floor 2-light casements. Ornate console brackets, quatrefoil in section, attached beneath second floor jetty. INTERIOR: lowest flight of spiral staircase survives in cellar beside chimneybreast against right wall: upper flights removed. In front range, posts, braces, transverse and spine beams survive almost intact, including numbered second floor joists, visible on first floor, and studded partition wall without infill on second floor. On first and second floors, original right end wall with studding and plastered infill survives. Front range has fireplace with lintel of tooled stone on ground floor; in wing, wide fireplace with cambered timber lintel, rebated cupboard and chamfered candle shelf. Three small fireplaces all with cambered brick arches on first floor. House was The Market Tavern at least from mid C19 to mid C20.
