YORK SE6052SW DUNCOMBE PLACE 1112-1/27/299 (North West side) 01/07/68 Nos.1, 2 AND 3 Dean Court Hotel (part) and attached railings GV II Row of three houses, now part of hotel. c1864 with later alteration. By Lewis Cubitt for the Dean and Chapter. MATERIALS: orange brick in raking Flemish stretcher bond; ashlar plinth and dado of coursed squared stone; ashlar quoins, dressings and window surrounds. Oriel and bay windows have stone slate roofs; main roof of Welsh slate with stone copings and brick stacks. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, basement and attics; 7 unequal bays to Duncombe Place with eighth bay on corner; alternate bays are wider, gabled and project: 2 bays to High Petergate. Basement openings have lintels formed by stepped-up plinth. Entrance to 1 altered to 2-light window over basement doorway: entrances to 2 and 3 have doors of 8 faceted panels beneath overlights recessed in quoined porches with shouldered 2-centred heads: all approached by steps. On each side of central doorway are 2-storey canted bays with windows of 6 mullioned and transomed lights on both floors. Outer bays have paired 2-light mullioned and transomed windows on ground floor; 4-light oriels on first floor. Intermediate bays on first floor have 2- or 3-light mullioned and transomed windows beneath brick relieving arches. Second floor windows are of paired shouldered lights. Gabled attics have 2-light windows with 2-centred heads: bays between contain lozenge shaped lights beneath triangular dormers. All windows are 1-pane sashes. 2-storey canted bay at corner has 3-light windows on ground and first floors: window on second floor as those on main front. High Petergate front: ground floor to left is blind, beneath extruded twin flue corbelled-out stack, arched at base over reset bordered panel carved with the keys of St Peter. To right are two 2-light windows on ground floor, one 3-light window on first floor, both mullioned and transomed; on second floor one 3-light window with shaped mullions and casements: attic has gabled dormer with casement window of 2 pointed lights. All mullions and transoms are chamfered with bold stops. Moulded sill strings to ground and first floor windows on both fronts. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: area railings are horizontal on low twisted standards, and have leaf tendrils in the spandrels. Listing NGR: SE6019052166
