Description
This document reports on a programme of evaluation, excavation and watching brief undertaken at the National Centre for Science Learning (NCSL) and new residential blocks for Alcuin College (Alcuin III), Campus North, University of York, Heslington, York. The work was carried out on behalf of Estates Services, University of York. Fieldwork took place intermittently between July 2004 and August 2005.
The programme of work demonstrated that the area had been landscaped dramatically during the development of the University in the 1960s, and that the new buildings only impacted areas of recent made-ground. The data collected during these and earlier investigations, together with a pre-University contour survey, have allowed the reconstruction of a general topographic model, which demonstrates the areas and varying depths of madeground across Campus North, and provides an indication of likely areas of archaeological potential within this area.
