Description

On ten occasions York Archaeological Trust carried out an archaeological watching brief during the top soil strip and other excavations on the green field site. The work also involved the excavation of a foul water pumping station and associated drain runs, which was carried out prior to the excavation of the foundation trenches for building plots 45 to 48 and 77. The watching brief did not encompass the entire development but was restricted to a 50m diameter circular area, located towards the western limit of the new housing estate. The size and location of this area, (stipulated by the City of York Council's archaeologist), was determined by the presence of a series of Romano-British field boundary or drainage ditches observed during the excavation of archaeological evaluation trenches. NMR Information: Event 1091460 - recorded ditches of a Roman field system as well as modern field drains.
